The Wisdom of Exaltation (Ḥikmat al-Rafʿiyyah)

Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ represents the human aspiration to rise through knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual realization. His exaltation symbolizes not merely being raised to a higher place but attaining a higher vision of reality and a deeper awareness of Allah.

Main Idea

True elevation is not measured by status, power, or achievement. It is an inner ascent in which knowledge transforms perception, character, and consciousness, enabling the seeker to perceive the Divine wisdom woven throughout creation.

Key Points

Introduction

After Noah, Ibn ʿArabī turns to Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, a prophet renowned in Islamic tradition for wisdom, knowledge, and spiritual elevation. The Qur’an describes him as “truthful, a prophet” and declares:

"And We raised him to a lofty station." (Qur'an 19:56–57)

Although the Qur’an says little about Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, Ibn ʿArabī finds in these verses a profound spiritual teaching. The wisdom associated with Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ is Ḥikmat al-Rafʿiyyah—the Wisdom of Exaltation. Rather than understanding this as a physical ascent alone, Ibn ʿArabī interprets it as an elevation of consciousness through which the seeker comes to perceive reality from a higher spiritual perspective.

Through Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ, Ibn ʿArabī explores one of the enduring aspirations of the human soul: the journey from limited perception to expansive vision, from outward appearances to inner realities, and from ordinary knowledge to transformative wisdom.

The Meaning of Exaltation

The Arabic word rafʿ means “to raise,” “to elevate,” or “to lift.”

For Ibn ʿArabī, however, exaltation is not primarily about physical location or worldly status. Spiritual realities cannot be confined to material space. The true ascent is an elevation in awareness, understanding, and closeness to Allah.

A person may possess little wealth or recognition yet occupy an exalted spiritual station. Conversely, one may enjoy power, influence, and prestige while remaining inwardly impoverished.

Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches that genuine greatness is measured by the depth of one’s perception rather than by external success. Every step toward greater understanding is, in reality, a step closer to the Divine.

Ascending Through Knowledge

Knowledge occupies a central place in Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ' wisdom. For Ibn ʿArabī, authentic knowledge does more than inform the mind—it transforms the soul. It becomes a ladder by which the seeker ascends from the outward appearance of things to their deeper realities. This ascent requires more than intellectual ability. It calls for sincerity, contemplation, humility, and a willingness to allow knowledge to reshape one's character. Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ therefore represents the seeker who pursues truth not for prestige or authority, but because every genuine insight reveals another aspect of Divine wisdom.

The Degrees of Reality

One of Ibn ʿArabī's recurring teachings is that reality unfolds in multiple levels. The visible world is only one dimension of existence. Beyond it lie deeper spiritual realities that cannot be perceived by the physical senses alone. Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ symbolizes the person who learns to see these interconnected levels of existence. As spiritual awareness expands, the seeker begins to recognize the harmony that unites heaven and earth, the visible and the unseen, matter and spirit. Exaltation therefore does not mean escaping the world but learning to perceive it from a higher perspective.

Heaven and Earth in Harmony

The Qur'anic image of Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ being raised to a lofty station symbolizes the relationship between heaven and earth. For Ibn ʿArabī, heaven and earth are not merely physical places but complementary dimensions of reality. Heaven represents the realm of spiritual meanings, while earth represents their outward manifestation. The spiritually mature person does not reject earthly life. Rather, they learn to recognize its deeper significance by seeing every created thing as a sign of Divine wisdom. Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches that the highest vision unites both worlds. The seeker remains fully engaged with earthly responsibilities while viewing them through the light of spiritual understanding.

Knowledge and Spiritual Transformation

Islamic tradition associates Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ with writing, astronomy, mathematics, and the sciences. Ibn ʿArabī expands this symbolism by presenting Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ as one who contemplates the order (niẓām) and harmony of creation. Every field of genuine knowledge reveals something of the Divine wisdom that sustains the universe. Yet knowledge remains incomplete unless it transforms the person who possesses it. True wisdom shapes character, deepens compassion, strengthens humility, and awakens gratitude. Knowledge that increases pride or domination has failed to achieve its highest purpose.

The Perfect Human as a Bridge Between Worlds

Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ also anticipates Ibn ʿArabī's vision of the Perfect Human (al-Insān al-Kāmil). The perfected human being serves as a bridge between the visible and invisible worlds, integrating intellectual understanding with spiritual realization. Rather than withdrawing from creation, the Perfect Human understands its deeper purpose and reflects Divine wisdom through knowledge, action, and character. Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ demonstrates that the highest elevation lies in harmonizing heaven and earth within one's own life.

Connection with Ibn ʿArabī's Broader System

The chapter of Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ illuminates several central themes in Ibn ʿArabī's metaphysical vision.

Divine Self-Disclosure (Tajallī)

Every new insight arises through Allah's continual unveiling of His wisdom within creation.

The Degrees of Existence

Reality consists of interconnected levels, each reflecting Divine wisdom according to its capacity.

Spiritual Realization (Taḥqīq)

Knowledge reaches completion only when it is embodied in one's character and way of life.

The Perfect Human (Al-Insān al-Kāmil)

The Perfect Human unites knowledge, action, and spiritual insight, becoming a bridge between the visible and the unseen. These principles explain why Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ occupies such an important place in Ibn ʿArabī's vision of human development.

Contemporary Relevance

Modern culture often equates success with wealth, influence, academic achievement, or public recognition. While these accomplishments have value, they do not necessarily indicate genuine human growth.

Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ offers a different understanding of progress.

He reminds us that outward advancement without inner transformation can produce knowledge without wisdom and power without compassion.

The real question is not simply whether we are advancing in our careers or accumulating information, but whether we are rising in understanding, character, and awareness of Allah.

In an age of rapid technological development and unprecedented access to information, Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ invites us to ask whether our inner lives are growing as quickly as our external capabilities.

Reflection

The wisdom of Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ raises enduring questions about knowledge, progress, and human aspiration.

Can scientific and technological advancement alone elevate humanity, or must moral and spiritual development accompany intellectual progress?

Why does the human heart continually seek something beyond its present condition?

For Ibn ʿArabī, this longing reflects the soul’s awareness of its Divine origin. Every genuine search for truth is ultimately a search for Allah, whether the seeker fully recognizes it or not.

Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ also reminds us that true elevation produces humility rather than superiority. The higher one rises in knowledge, the more one recognizes that all wisdom is a gift from Allah.

Conclusion

The Bezel of Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ teaches that true exaltation is an inward ascent from limited perception to spiritual vision. Through knowledge, contemplation, and the harmonization of heaven and earth, Idris عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ becomes the symbol of humanity’s capacity to rise toward higher realities without abandoning the responsibilities of earthly life.

His wisdom reminds us that the highest form of success is not measured by status or achievement but by the transformation of the heart and the expansion of consciousness. In Ibn ʿArabī’s vision, every step toward deeper understanding is ultimately a step toward Allah.

Critical Question

What kind of elevation are you seeking in your life today? Are your efforts leading only to greater achievement, or are they also helping you grow in wisdom, humility, and awareness of the deeper realities that give life its true meaning?
